English Country House in Greenville

Modeled after the grand estates that dot the picturesque English countryside, this noble residence is characterized by an impressive, stately profile and a veneration for natural materials. The gorgeous works of Sir Edwin Lutyens - a British architect known for his visionary adaptations of traditional architectural styles to meet the demands of his time - inspired the design and strong architectural statements of this home.

At the end of the driveway, visitors are greeted by a regal structure that boasts a pleasing symmetry and balance without being predictable. Steep roof pitches and peaked gables create bold lines that give this home a manifest presence that is both reinforced and softened by the natural material palette. Copper arches and awnings and wrought iron fixtures offer a graceful patina that is warmed and mellowed by wooden accents and the rosy brick detailing that lends the home its consummate character and charm. A sense of history is injected into the exterior through several distinctive elements: the carriage style doors of the detached garage - a vaulted space that acts as both workshop and a place for the homeowners to showcase their car collection - as well as the attached garage; the arched wooden speakeasy door with iron strap hinges that leads to the home’s formal gardens and covered back patio; and the handsome timber frame that shelters the outdoor fireplace.

Inside the home, dynamic architectural brush strokes are punctuated with finely crafted details and selectively chosen materials and finishes. Upon entering the home, a delicately composed stair hall features a custom newel post, wrought iron railing and pendant light fixture, and a multi-story wall of windows that casts brilliant natural light across the entirety of the entrance and stairwell. In the family room, a custom built-in hides the television to allow the limestone fireplace and arched window bay with inviting seating nook to take center stage. A vaulted gallery with a wet bar and butler’s pantry connects a courtly formal dining room to a bright, traditional white kitchen that marries the bells and whistles required by the modern chef with the best of English countryside charm.
